Created in the 1860s by our founder John B. on a trip out West seeking open skies and new frontiers, The Frontier Plains Felt Hat is the hat that started it all. In keeping with its unparalleled heritage, each Frontier Plains Felt Hat is made the old-fashioned way, dyed and shaped and distressed entirely by hand. This results in a hat that is truly one of a kind, with its own unique color, shape and level of distressing. (Note: As a result of this time-honored process, your hat may vary significantly in color from the versions shown at left.)
Each Frontier Plains Felt Hat is crafted from high-quality 6X fur felt for a lifetime of wear, with a signature leather hat band, interior leather sweatband, and satin lining. With its unmistakable profile and signature distressed patina, the Frontier Plains Felt Hat may be our most iconic hat—the ultimate marriage of form and function.
- NOTE: The Boss of The Plains is handcrafted, hand-dyed and hand-distressed. That means no two hats have the same color or character, making each hat truly one of a kind. Shipping is free on U.S. orders of $75 or more; orders under $75 ship for a flat $6.95. We currently ship to U.S. addresses only.
Orders are picked and packed within 1–2 business days. Once shipped, delivery normally takes another 3–7 business days, and you'll receive a tracking link by email. Full details on our Shipping Policy.
You have 30 days from delivery to return any unworn item with tags in its original packaging. Return postage is paid by the buyer, unless your item arrived damaged, wrong, or never arrived — in those cases we replace it or refund you in full and cover the postage.

Each product page lists that hat’s available sizes and its X rating — the higher the X, the finer the felt or straw. Measure around your head just above the ears and match the closest size. Natural felt, fur, straw and leather vary slightly in grain and shade from piece to piece — that is the material, not a defect.
